Better Block (Flint)

The Better Block Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that educates, equips, and empowers communities and their leaders to reshape and reactivate built environments to promote the growth of healthy and vibrant neighborhoods. They work around the world turning vacant lots to active plazas, overbuilt streets to calm, pedestrian-friendly experiences, and overgrown grass lots to parks.

Their approach is quick to showcase how change can happen, and temporary to test out ideas and get the community’s feedback as they get to experience proposed changes.We are working with them to reimagine the former "Mega Coney Island" to reimagine its use. We can’t tell you what, exactly, is going to happen as the process is led by the Better Block but determined by the community.

SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH

ASSR and NAR Policies

ASSR

For Regular program students, after receipt of a grade below the 3.0 standard, your Advisor will send you an email (“Warning”) confirming grade standards (3.0), and to offer support as you continue in your programming. After a second grade below 3.0, an ASSR is scheduled.

For Advanced standing students, an ASSR is scheduled after earning any grade below 3.0.

As stated in the MSW Handbook: “Typically, the ASSR meeting will be called by the MSW Program Director or designee based on information provided by faculty, Graduate Advisors, or Field Office staff. The MSW Program Director or designee will schedule and chair the ASSR meeting and the Graduate Advisor will attend. The classroom instructor may attend as well.

The student is expected to attend and may bring a support person who must be someone from the University community, i.e. a faculty member or another student. The support person will not have an active role in this proceeding and is not allowed to participate verbally.

The process is designed to be informal and non-adversarial. It is an opportunity to review what happened and discuss options. After exploring the situation the participants will make recommendations.”

NAR

Per the MSW Handbook: “An NAR is initiated when academic or field education faculty members believe that a particular student has violated standards for professional and ethical behavior or otherwise does not demonstrate the qualities necessary to become a social work practitioner. In that event, a non-academic review will be called to discuss relevant behaviors and make a determination about the student’s standing in the program.

Reasons for an NAR may include, but are not limited to:

failure to meet acceptable standards of professional conduct and ethics, personal integrity, interpersonal skills, or deportment required for professional practice
inappropriate or disruptive behavior toward peers, faculty, or staff at school or field education
criminal activity defined as charges and rulings of civil adjudication and/or criminal convictions while enrolled in the MSW program
return from a medical leave or other withdrawal”
